‘…and meet Thee in the silence’ was commissioned by Stichting Cantatediensten Kloosterkerk The Hague (NL), on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the foundation. The piece is written for choir and organ, on texts by Dag Hammarskjöld from his diary Markings.

‘…and meet Thee in the silence’ is geschreven in opdracht van Stichting Cantatediensten Kloosterkerk (Den Haag), ter gelegenheid van het 60-jarig bestaan van de stichting en de Bach-cantatediensten in Den Haag. Het werk is geschreven voor koor en orgel, op teksten van Dag Hammarskjöld uit zijn dagboekaantekening Merkstenen.

‘…and meet Thee in the silence’ was first performed on Sunday 25th June 2023 in a church service in the Kloosterkerk in which also cantata BWV 177 ‘Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ’ was performed. There are some subtle references to the church song ‘Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ’, as well as to Bach’s organ arrangement BWV 639 of this song. Although a combination of a performance with BWV 177 or BWV 639 is very useful, the piece also functions on its own. 

De première van ‘…and meet Thee in the silence’ vond plaats op zondag 25 juni 2023 tijdens een dienst in de Kloosterkerk, waarin ook cantat BWV 177 ‘Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ’ werd uitgevoerd. Het stuk bevat enkele subtiele verwijzingen naar zowel dit lied, als naar Bachs orgelbewerking BWV 639 van dit lied. Een combinatie van een uitvoering van dit werk met BWV 177 of BWV 639 is goed denkbaar, maar het stuk kan ook op zichzelf functioneren.
